Enterovirus Cases Confirmed in Southern California Are State’s First Diagnoses in 2014

Respiratory tract infection (RTI) in children presents a considerable health-care burden involving not only the cost of direct medical care but also that incurred due to parental absence from work.  Children attending preschool are three times more likely to suffer an infection than those staying at home due to high transmission rates within such facilities.  RTIs can occur in the upper or lower respiratory tract affecting the sinuses, throat, airways or lungs.  Antibiotics are administered for bacterial infections, but their inadvertent use for viral infections is ineffective and can contribute to antibiotic overuse and antibiotic resistance.  Alternative strategies for the prevention of RTI in children attending preschool are needed.
